Environmental Policy 2007

The Directors of the Company recognise the importance of environmental considerations in the day to day running of the organisation. In all areas of our activities, we follow policies that recognise this. We believe that with the best practices observed, timber and wood products are the ultimate sustainable resource and recyclable material, requiring low energy consumption to process and being thermally efficient in use. The Company is a supporter of the policies adopted by Forests Forever and is a signatory to those recommended policies through our membership of the Timber Trade Federation.

Forests Forever, on behalf of the UK timber industry, campaigns to help safeguard the world’s forests by encouraging improved forest management, responsible trading and promoting the positive environmental aspects of using timber. As signatories to the Forest Forever policy, we actively seek from our suppliers, evidence of commitment to continuous improvement in environmental performance, information on the source of timber purchased and evidence of good forest management practice. Christie Timber Services Ltd is committed to sourcing materials from suppliers who are operating within the laws of their own country.

With the growing public awareness of the environment and environmental issues, and with some customers now specifically requesting certified timber, we have taken positive steps to achieve recognised standards of chain of custody certification not only in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) but also the TRADA Track Forest Products Scheme.

The Company aims to adopt environmental standards at least equal to legal requirements and to integrate environmental considerations into its decision making in such areas as transport, energy usage, waste disposal and health and safety requirements.

Timber Procurement Policy 2007

Christie Timber Services supports certification as an instrument to demonstrate that its wood products originate from sustainable sources. Confidence in the environmental credentials of any raw material supply can only be accepted if the labelling and certificates relating to the product are supported by a recognised international, independent standard. Certification forms an extremely useful tool for ensuring that we are able to preserve our forests for the future benefit of mankind in order to provide an economic return and source for employment.

Christie Timber Services will prioritise its purchasing of wood goods from sustainable sources, or where there is the need, work with suppliers towards this goal. We will give priority to suppliers who are able to provide evidence of sound forest management principles or endeavour to work towards such systems, which trace the source, authenticate and certificate the origin of wood from the forests. The recognition of the importance of environmental organisations and their information sources is valuable in the process of assessing suppliers.

We will seek from our suppliers, evidence of good forest management, and Christie Timber Services believes that ongoing active dialogue with its suppliers is the only way to ensure that our minimum requirement of timber being legal is satisfied.

Christie Timber Services will assist customers to provide relevant information where available on the sources of timber so as to aid them achieving their aims an objectives, and as a long standing member of the Timber Trade Federation is bound by its Code of Conduct designed to ensure that its members take all possible steps to minimise their environmental impact.
